BROKEN MONUMENTS

BROKEN MONUMENTS is a site-specific work I created in an empty storefront space on a commercial street in Seaside, CA. I worked with the local recycling center and local businesses to reclaim hundreds of used fluorescent tubes and other materials, to make two temporary sculptural installations. For the first installation, I used a projector to illuminate the lamps from above and a mirror to reflect the image. For the second installation, I used a desk lamp to illuminate the fluorescent lamps from behind. Both works are about projecting the light source onto the light object in three-dimensional space. The title of the works combines Dan Flavin’s monuments with The Broken Kilometer by Walter De Maria.
